September

Changeover season. Autumn’s rushing in. You may or may not be surprised to learn that September is in fact Preparedness Month. Here on the farm, our reactions to this news were mixed.

I sit at the table, shelling elderberries from their spiny hands and eyeing them where they lie in their trays for dehydration; many thousands of dark promises. Outside, the last of the good sun’s turning its back on us and the rain between is starting to mean business; six months of days and nights now where we’ll focus on feeding the Rayburn what it needs.

I wanted to talk to you about the changeover, which is not just seasonal but marks a turning chapter. Wanted to look back – and so forwards.
